As a Blogger, it can be very easy to get overwhelmed with the abundance of things to wrap our heads around to ensure we have the highest-quality Blog, with the highest chances to reach as many people as possible.

SEO is one of the major players in sometimes throwing us off when it comes to starting our Blogs and growing it.

However, I am here to tell you that you don't need to make it hard, and you don't need to do what everyone else is telling you. Same way you don't need to follow what I do either! But I am here to show you a simple, basic AND easy way to SEO for Blogging beginners, just as myself.

This is my current strategy as a beginner, doing it all from scratch, by myself.

Without tools.

Without fluff.

As I grow my Blog, I may change my SEO strategy, but right now, my focus is my content quality, consistency, and elevating my Blog website and marketing.

I want to make sure I am also doing the most possible for SEO, but I also know this is something that will grow as I learn and evolve during the process.

SEO in a nutshell

Before exposing my SEO strategy, let's just quickly cover what SEO is in simple words, since we don't need to make things complicated when they don't need to be:

  • SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation

  • SEO is the concept of "optimising" your content

  • In other words, SEO is what Bloggers do to make sure their content has the highest chances of ranking highly on Google Search, so that when someone does a search related to your blog post, your blog post can show as close to the first page of searches as possible

  • We want this, so we can get our Blog as many views and readers as possible! More people can see what we are working so hard on and increases our chances of monetisation

  • The most common way Bloggers do SEO on their blog posts and website is by the use of relevant keywords: words that tell Google what your Blog is about, and words people would search on Google for related topics

  • Keywords can be sprinkled EVERYWHERE; in your blog post, in your Blog title, in your SEO tags in the back-end (before publishing your post), in your blog post description, in the back-end of any images you may use (image alt text)

Ultimately, SEO is a way of the Google mechanism being able to place your Blog into a category, so that then it knows when, and how, to rank your Blog content.

This does also take time, since Google is such a popular, and content-dense platform, that it takes consistency and time to be able to get your Blog posts ranked by Google.

However, if you're like me, then your Blog business is for the long-run and your goal is to create a sustainable long-term business online, so even if it takes time it's always best to stay persistent and keep going at it. The time will pass anyway, and you'll keep Blogging in the mean time, so you know your time of recognition is bound to come regardless.

When people find your Blog via Google search or recommendations, that is what many refer to as "organic traffic", since your viewers came directly from Google, organically, without advertisements.

Now that that's all clear, let's get into my easy SEO strategy for Bloggers.

straight to the source

If I'm not using tools, then what am I using?

Well, what better source of knowledge on SEO and what people are searching, and wanting to know about, than Google? The source itself!

Google ranks our content, and is therefore where we can also get an idea of what people want to see through:

  • recommended search keywords

  • the "people also searched for" tab at the bottom of each search list page

  • the highest-ranking blog post titles (the ones on the first page of any search)

Therefore, just because no one is talking about it, doesn't mean Google isn't available for us to use as an SEO strategy.

Using Google, even if on a basic level, is more of an SEO strategy than not using it at all.

Also, when you go on Google and actually expose yourself to the searches others have made, you gain an idea as to how popular, or how "in-demand", your blog post might be. If many people are asking a question that your blog post provides an answer for, then you know you have an eager audience where your content will be useful towards; to help add value to them in the best way you know how.

Of course, this might also beg the question of competition vs demand, and how tools might be useful in making you stand-out with your blogging content; if your SEO strategy includes a tool that helps you breakdown what topics are relevant to your niche, but have low competition, which is usually the sweet-spot. HOWEVER, I call it my "easy way" to SEO for my Blog, since I haven't dived into that world yet.

This is my beginner-friendly, and current SEO strategy that works for me and where I am currently at with my Blog.

how I SEO

What I do is establish my blog post ideas BEFORE I do my SEO, which is contrary to some advice you might see online, but is the way that works for me.

I'll get into why I do that a bit later, but after having my blog post written and finalised, I will THEN do my SEO.

My easy SEO strategy that ANY Blogger, beginner or not, can do is:

  • I go on Google and start typing a question or phrase related to the blog post I have just written.

  • I, then, look for any phrases or questions that Google is suggesting to me in 3 places:

  1. the search phrases Google recommends in the drop-down menu of the search bar

  2. the blog post titles that rank on the first search page of Google

  3. the "people also search for" tab at the bottom of the search results

I make a note of all the titles and phrases I see on this first page alone of results, and I make a list on my notes.

These will be my keyword phrases that I will use to help optimise my blog post.

To help optimise my blog post, I copy-and-paste these phrases into the following places:

  1. the post's Tags in the back-end. No one sees this but it helps Google identify what your blog post is about and consequently, be able to show your content in relevant searches (back-end)

  2. the alternative text of images. I will copy-in phrases from my SEO research, rather than describing what the image is, since we want any opportunity for Google to identify us as the relevant key phrase we are writing content for (back-end)

  3. the excerpt of the post, or description. Readers will see this as the short intro to what your post will be about on the main page, so I will sprinkle in a few phrases where it makes sense to (front-end)

  4. throughout the blog post itself. I will re-read my blog post once again, and try to incorporate these key phrases where possible, without reducing the quality of the content (front-end)

In this way, I have covered SEO for both the front-end (what readers will see) and back-end (what readers won't see, but still very important) of the blog post.

And that's it!

Going back to what we mentioned regarding doing SEO before vs after having a blog post idea...

Some bloggers use SEO to inform them on what blog posts to write about, but I find that is less-authentic to the value I want to provide to my community here, and to what I want to share about my unique experience.

Therefore, I use my own experience (and its associated value) to inform me on what blog posts I write about.

How do I know the blog posts will rank? Because the online community is VAST, and as long as you have a specific topic you write within, or a select-few, it should be easier for readers to resonate with you because there's a theme to find your crowd (rather than talking about everything, and not relating on anything).

  • For me, these would be my content pillars: 1. my unwanted pregnancy as a childfree girlie, 2. making money online with Blogging, and 3. relatable girlie things in our 20s

  • The latter being my more generic topic where I might branch out more in-terms of my blogging content, such as lifestyle, 20's thought-provoking posts, solo dates

  • But having an overarching theme that ties all of these content pillars (or topics) together which is: my mission to take control of my own narrative by achieving my dreams, and inspire other women to do the same too, even when life doesn't always go as we have wanted or planned for

When you know what your content pillars are, everything becomes clearer for your Blog!

You most likely have searched yourself on Google for all the questions you once had, and can now use your experience-since to answer those exact same questions.

The same way you have been in that position, many others are and will be at some point, so you can be that guide for them; same way you once searched for that orientation on Google before too!

A bit of a long-winded explanation on the concept of SEO vs blog post ideas, but I feel that breaking it down can help you figure out what you prefer and help expose you to the reality of how different Bloggers may want to approach this, and how you may want to also!

case study - SEO with me!

Let's walkthrough one of my recent blog posts with me, and do SEO together; using my easy, no-tools strategy discussed in this post!

Just so you can see how easily SEO can be done, if you choose to do so this way. (I do know there are many more things I could be doing for SEO, I'm sure, that I am not currently aware of, but I want to normalise taking baby steps and being okay with doing something even if it is at its most basic level).

For example, let's take my blog post: how I went from 1K to 1MILLION monthly views on Pinterest in 1 year!

I would follow my steps:

  • Writing the most relevant phrase to my blog post into Google, and making a note of all the searches Google recommends to me

  • Then doing the same for all the blog post titles that have ranked highest, by Google, by being one the first page of search results

  • Lastly, scrolling all the way to the bottom to see Google's recommendations for similar searches

  • After that, it's all about sprinkling it everywhere you can, without jeopardising on the quality of the content you want to deliver to your audience!

no tools

Of course, this is just the way I choose to SEO for my Blog, but you need to see what works best for you, at the stage of Blogging that you are at.

For me, this works best, since when I tried to use and explore different SEO tools, it was just confusing me and taking-up a lot of time that I could be using to write quality content or engage in my marketing on Pinterest.

Not to neglect SEO, since I know it is very important in organically getting my content seen by the world, but I wanted simplify it for myself for the stage that I am at (about 11 months into my Blogging journey / consistent for the last 6 months).

simplicity is key

Just to add some final notes; that keeping it simple does not mean you are not doing enough.

If you do SEO the easiest way possible, like me, it does not mean you don't care or are not being committed enough. It means you have a focus in-mind at the moment, and you are trying your best at SEO in the way you have current capacity for.

As you progress, and tackle different elements of your Blog, and general concept of running an online business, opportunities will arise for growth and learning in all ways, including SEO.

That's why I always highlight the importance of seeing where you are at in your Blogging journey, and having a clear view of your priorities at-current.

We all have a strategy, and it doesn't have to look the same for everyone.

Doing SOMETHING for SEO is better than nothing, and it already shows that you are dipping your feet into something you previously had no familiarity with, and that right there is already something to be proud for!

Also, when it comes to tools, I would always take recommendations from online gurus with a pinch of salt, since many may be indicating for you to use the same tool, but it could also just be that that tool has a really good affiliate program. They might just be affiliate marketing.

I hope that has encouraged any other fellow Blogger girlies who are just starting-off with their Blogs, or might be way more ahead, and still find SEO quite a bit of a challenge in itself!

Everything comes at its own pace.
